The Fiat Cinquecento project (also know as project "Fiat 170" or X1/79) had
started in the first half of the 80's. The constructors of this car
were going to make a small and not expensive city car, which would also
be cheap in use.
We can only suppose from the name of the project X1/79, that Fiat
wanted to make a car for the future like previous X1 cars. In spite of the
age of the project, the Cinquecento is still a modern car.
The name "Cinquecento" means 500: it should remind of the legendary
Fiat 500, the first very good city car from the Fiat group.
The present-day Cinquecento is produced with 3 types of engine. The
first: most powerful engine has 55 HP and it is installed only in the
special Sporting version. The second: medium engine has 40 HP and the
third: only 30. This last one is sold only in Central and East Europe.
