Unlike former projects, where design studio's like Ital Design, I.DE.A,
PininFarina, Bertone and Giugiaro have
made the initial sketches, the barchetta is a design of Fiat's own
Centre Stile.
The car is build at Carrozzeria Maggiora in Chivasso (near Torino, where Fiat and PininFarina also have production facilities). A small emblem is fitted in the door.
Maggiora has been a coach-builder since 1925. Large scale production started
in 1951 by producing bodywork panels for Fiat and complete bodies for
several Italian car-makers.
Over the years these included models such as the Fiat 2300 S Coupé,
Lancia B20 and Flaminia Touring, Alfa Romeo 2000 Touring, Maserati Mistral,
De Tomaso Mangusta and Pantera.
Recent models include the Lancia Delta Integrale Evoluzione and Kappa Coupé,
and some special products, prototypes and pre-production
models in which Maggiora specialized in since 1978. This has resulted in
some independent models like the Fiat Panda Van and Uno Van.
